titleA

An The Edge Gateways do not have a physical reset button or any other specific hardware detail to reset them to factory default. Instead an USB stick is needed to reset a gateway to factory settingsinitiate to recover the system software.

Attention! Recovering a gateway with the following procedure explained below will clear all existing contents on the device's main storage memory (HDD, eMMC).
Before So before continuing make sure you saved all important informations on the gateway to somewhere else beforemade a backup using the gateway's managment web UI under apt-Control Panel/System/Backup and Restore.

USB stick preparation

  • Use an USB stick with a minimum size of 500Mbyte
  • The stick can should be either USB 2.0 or USB 3.0 compatible. A gateway offers both options.
  • The stick have to be formatted FAT32
  • The stick's volume have to be named "RECOVERY". Other names will not be accepted.
  • Sticks of sizes >=64GByte can't be formatted FAT32 under Windows. A tool such as "HP USB STICK FORMAT" is needed to format bigger sizes.

Extracting the provided image

  • The firmware system software image comes as zip compressed archive
  • Use a tool such as 7Zip to decompress the file
  • If you open the image you get see a structure like this:

  • Extract the two folders "boot" and "EFI" and the firmware file whole image to your the USB stick's root directory in a 1:1 copy to its root directory

Gateway type

Gateway

Installing the system software

  • Switch off the gateway
  • Plug in the USB stick in any of the gateway's USB ports
  • Power on the gateway
  • The gateways loader will recognized the USB stick during boot sequence automatically and initiates the installation
  • Please do not interrupt the installation and wait until the device powers down.
  • Remove the USB stick and restart the gateway

What to do if the installation procedure does not work?

Gateway with a DVI display port (

e.g.

NIOT-E-TIJCX-GB-XX)

  • Make sure the gateway is switched off. The green power LED indicator will be in state "off".
  • Plug in a keyboard in any of the gateway's USB ports
  • Connect a monitor to the gateway's DVI-I display or DP port. Just use a 1:1 DVI/ DP cable only will work (don’t use adapters DP/DVI-I to VGA or so, they will not be recognized by the gateway and the screen remains black)
  • Plug in the firmware stick in any of the available USB ports (USB3.0 is much faster and marked in blue)
  • Power on the gateway
  • The time the gateway beeps with a sound press key DEL on your keyboard. That This activates the BIOS configuration screen on your monitor. If you are too late pressing the DEL key the gateway will boot and detect an invalid USB boot media stick. In this case reset the gateway and start from beginning.
  • Use the cursors to move to the “Boot” menu item and then move down to “Boot Option #1”. It should be set to “UEFI OS: (P1: xxxxxxxxxx)" which is the HDD
  • Press "enter" to open the other boot options. Choose “UEFI: <name of the stick> xxGB”. DO NOT choose the option "UEFI: Built-in EFI Shell".
  • Move the cursor up to “Save & Exit” and confirm saving with yes. The gateway will reboot automatically .and will now start booting from USB stick instead of the HDD
  • During the following boot sequence the gateway will boot from the USB stick For a short time of 3 seconds you are prompted again to choose between tow boot options. Please ignore it and wait until the 3 seconds has been elapsed to boot the "Hilscher IoT Platform recovery" option from USB stick.and initiates the installation
  • Please do not interrupt the installation and wait until the device powers down
  • Remove the USB stick and restart the gateway

Gateway with no display port (

e.g.

NIOT-E-IB100-GB-XX)

  • Insert the USB stick and power the gateway
  • Optionally you may connect Make sure the gateway is switched off. The green power LED indicator will be in state "off"
  • Connect a serial cable to the serial RS 232 port to monitor serial console BIOS outputs on a terminal program at settings 11500,8,N,1
  • Plug in the firmware stick in any of the available USB ports (USB3.

Update procedure

  • During the update procedure you see console outputs on either the display or serial port depending on the gateway model in use. They can be ignored if passed with OK.
  • Let the update progress bar run to the end. The gateway will automatically switch off.
  • Important is not to remove the USB stick from the gateway else the update procedure would be executed again.
  • Power on the gateway again. Since there is no USB stick connected any more, the boot order will be reordered back.
  • Again you will recognize console outputs and you see the update procedure finalizing.
  • In case the the console output stops, the recovery procedure is finished. Gateway with display will end up in a netIOT screen with login
  • Keyboard and optional serial cable or monitor are no longer needed for further operations. You can remove them from the gateway finally.0 is much faster and marked in blue)
  • Power on the gateway
  • Watch the console output and press key DEL on your keyboard in your terminal program when you the the BIOS start screen. This activates the BIOS configuration screen in your terminal window. If you are too late pressing the DEL key reset the gateway and start from beginning
  • Use the cursors to move to the “Boot” menu item and then move down to “Boot Option #1”. It should be set to “UEFI OS: (P1: xxxxxxxxxx)" which is the eMMC
  • Press "enter" to open the other boot options. Choose “UEFI: <name of the stick> xxGB”. DO NOT choose the option "UEFI: Built-in EFI Shell"
  • Move the cursor up to “Save & Exit” and confirm saving with yes. The gateway will reboot automatically and will now start booting from USB stick instead of the eMMC
  • During the following boot sequence the gateway will boot from USB stick and initiates the installation
  • Please do not interrupt the installation and wait until the device powers down
  • Remove the USB stick and restart the gateway
