Product Updates for supporting new flash-types

An essential aspect of Hilscher's product lifecycle management process is around maintaining existing products to guarantee sustained availability for our valued customers.

The flash component used in numerous Hilscher products was discontinued as part of the manufacturer's portfolio streamlining. In order to offer our customers a long-term and future-proof alternative, we will use flash components that support the SFDP (Serial Flash Discoverable Parameter) standard. This ensures that our products remain compatible with evolving hardware requirements and ensures a seamless user experience.

In scenarios where protocol firmware versions come in two variants within the software download package, both versions are fully compatible with the hardware currently being shipped.

Through a Product Change Notification (PCN) in the upcoming months, Hilscher will inform that, starting from a new hardware revision, the corresponding firmware generation, specifically the latest version available in the software download package, must be used.

Below you will find a list of firmware versions from which an unlimited compatibility is given:

  • netTAP 151 → V1.4.0.5
  • netTAP 151 CCIES → V1.3.0.4

Other products are not affected by the flash update.

To provide clarity on firmware generation status and versioning, we have outlined a comprehensive description, available at the following link: https://hilscher.atlassian.net/wiki/x/KQBQBg

In scenarios with two variants, one firmware is then used for an evolution without API and function change, only including support for Flash types supporting SFDP, and the other one, the latest recommended firmware generation, represents the latest technology maintained and enhanced by new features.

Hilscher will send a PCN document with detailed descriptions of the compatibility of each affected product with at least 6 months notice before the change, to ensure a smooth update-timeframe for the firmware.

Migration to Firmware V2.0.0.x for netTAP 100

Expand

Due to a major stack update of the firmware, the DTMs for the netTAP 100 are changed in SYCON.net. During the configuration of a netTAP 100 devices it is possible to choose between different DTMs in order to define the desired protocol combination:

To enable the configuration of netTAP 100 gateways with the old and new firmware, use the following DTMs for the respective firmware version:

DTM nameFirmware version
Open Modbus/TCP V3V2.0.0.x
POWERLINK Controlled Node V3V2.0.0.x
PROFINET IO Controller V3Do not use. Please use PROFINET IO Controller instead.
Open Modbus/TCPV1.7.0.x
POWERLINK Controlled NodeV1.7.0.x
PROFINET IO ControllerV1.7.0.x
OthersV2.0.0.x and V1.7.0.x

The version of the firmware is shown when the desired conversion is selected. (See here (1)).

The EDS files related to the firmware version are provided in different folders:

..\ Firmware,_EDS,_Examples,_Webpages\Firmware_&_EDS\netTAP 100\DeviceDescription\V1.7.0.x and V2.0.0.x respectively

  1. Install the above mentioned software components.

  2. Connect the power supply to the device.

  3. Connect the device to the PC for configuration using the appropriate method. For further details, please see folder “netTAP_Manuals” under “Documentation” of this DVD.

  4. Start SYCON.net.

  5. In the device catalog, select the gateway to be configured and place it in the network view (2).

  6. Open the configuration menu (right click) of the gateway (3).

  7. Select the desired conversion under "Configuration" (4).

  8. Select and download the firmware to the gateway (5).

  9. Set up a network configuration and conversion rules via SYCON.net. For more information see folder “SYCON.net Configuration Software” under “\Documentation\Configuration_Manuals” in this DVD and the “Documentation” section).

  10. Download the configuration to the gateway (6).
  11. The gateway is automatically restarted and starts the desired firmware with the corresponding configuration.
  12. Integrate the gateway into the desired application.
