How does netANALYZER Scope PCAP import work?

Q

How does netANALYZER Scope PCAP import work?

A

PCAP import "emulates" live capturing form a netANALYZER device. Thus for every netANALYZER Ethernet port (0..3) a PCAP file can be imported as frame stream.

PCAP files with netANALYZER link layer contain information about the original netANALYZER reception port during live capturing. Thus for such files automatically the frames from the corresponding port are imported.

PCAP files with do not contain a netANALYZER link layer, such as files captured with other devices or a PC network interface, do not contain port information. For such files the user has to take care to import individual frame streams correctly to individual netANALYZER ports.

PCAPNG files may contain multiple frame streams from different capture devices. netANALYZER Scope recognizes these multiple capture devices and the user is asked to select the capture device which's frames shall be imported to an individual netANALYZER port.

Combinations of different file formats on different import ports are possible. For example a netANALYZER link layer PCAP file may be imported to port 0, while an interface of a PCAPNG file could be imported to port 1 and a third PCAP file without netANALYZER link layer could be imported to port 2. It is not necessary to import data to every ports, so individual ports may be blank.
